3 foreigners held for booking air tickets with stolen cards - Times of India 21 May 2008

New Delhi: With the arrest of three persons, the crime branch of Delhi Police claimed to have busted a gang of international cheats who used to book e-tickets with various airlines by using stolen data of international credit cards.

The accused have been identified as 32-year-old Kailash Shrestha, 28-year-old Kedar Nath — both from Nepal — and 32-year-old Mikahil Akolade, a Nigerian national.

The police also seized data of more than 250 tickets and 500 credit cards besides two laptops and five mobile phones from their possession.

The police said the two Nepali nationals used to contact visitors from Nepal and the northeast states and offer them cheap tickets. They would take payment in cash from the travellers and booked the tickets in their names using the stolen credit card details, causing damages to the credit card holders and airlines, said a senior police officer.

The gang was busted after the police received a complaint from a major domestic airline alleging that there have been several incidents of fraudulent booking of e-tickets.

According to the police, they studied pattern of the ebookings and zeroed on some mobile numbers and e-mail addresses. ‘‘These numbers and e-mail addresses led us to Kedar Nath. He was apprehended on May 12 from Pusa Road and two mobile phones and three SIM cards that were used in booking e-tickets were recovered from his possession.

During interrogation, Nath disclosed that Shrestha and Akolade are also involved in the racket,’’ said a senior police officer. On the instance of Kedar, the police conducted a raid and arrested Shrestha from Malviya Nagar on May 12. Akolade was arrested from Tilak Nagar on May 18.

The accused told police that they used to get the credit card details from countries like Thailand and Singapore. They had cheated various airlines to the tune of several crore rupees in past few years, said the police. The police added some members of the gang were absconding and raids were being conducted to apprehend them.
