Three held for hacking e-mail ID - The Hindu - 25 May 2008

CHENNAI: The Cyber Crime Cell of the Crime Branch-CID police arrested three persons from Bangalore on Monday on the charge of hacking the e-mail identity of a person living in Udhagamandalam.

An official release said S.D. Paul, 48, of the Nilgiris, lodged a complaint with the CB- CID police that his e-mail identity was hacked.

The hackers removed the contact address from his mail and then created another mail in his name. They sent it to some of his friends, asking them to deposit Rs. 75,000. Frank D’Souza, one of the friends of Mr. Paul residing in Kuwait received the mail that requested him to deposit the sum in a reputed bank in Bangalore.

Following this, a case was registered and a police team went to Bangalore and arrested P. Neville Philips (35), Peter Francis (42) and Peter Anderson (38).

The police are on the lookout for Ritu (25), wife of Peter Anderson, who is absconding.
The release said Mr. Paul’s wife and Peter Anderson had lived in an orphanage in the Nilgiris for 25 years. Ritu got Mr. Paul’s e-mail identity and password when she visited his house two years ago.

Following the complaint, the police warned Mr. D’Souza in Kuwait not to deposit any money.
The arrested were involved in a similar fraud last year and a case was registered with the Ashok Nagar station in Bangalore.

The police have also requested Net users not to respond to such requests without verifying the genuineness of the mail. Offenders mainly targeted Indians living abroad, the release said.
