New Delhi, May 10: “Hacked By Cilgin Hacker thanks : m0sted , kerem125 , sari_seytan , ercu_145 all Terörist Crew !n...” – While it is difficult to comprehend what this message on the ‘gujarat.bsnl.co.in’ website says, it is amply clear that the government-owned telecom major’s website is no more under its control. As the first word of the message says, the site has been ‘hacked’! While hacking of websites is nothing new to the world, and to India, what makes this development news-worthy is the fact that the site belongs to a government-owned firm and its defacing comes after similar treatment was meted out recently to other government websites by ‘the web destroyers’ from across the border.Only recently, sources in the External Affairs Ministry had admitted that the ministry’s computer networks were being targeted from time to time and a recent hacking was traced to some Chinese IP addresses. While the ministry was not sure about the antecedents of hackers or their links with the Chinese government, its sources did add “some IP addresses were also traced to America and eastern Europe”.The matter is sensitive because according to sources, the hackers are attempting to break into the ministry’s communications network to access e-mails between officials and communication with foreign missions that gives them a sense of sensitive policy making in crucial areas. The hackers, however, are not targeting just Indian government websites and computer networks. The internal network of the Pentagon, the US defence headquarters, was targeted last year, allegedly by Chinese hackers. China was also accused last year of hacking into computer networks of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chancery and three other ministries. However, in all these cases, Beijing denied its involvement. Last Monday, Chinese officials again dismissed as “baseless” reports that their government was involved in cyber warfare targeting Indian computer networks. “The Chinese government has nothing to do with it. The Chinese government discourages such activities against all countries, including India,” they had said
