3 held for credit card fraud - The Hindu - 22 May 2008

HYDERABAD: A 26-year-old man B. Basawaraj, who allegedly duped banks of Rs. 4.5 lakh by using credit cards obtained through fraudulent means, was arrested by the city police on Wednesday.

Two others — P. Nagaraj, a mobile phone shop proprietor and N. Srisailam, petrol pump worker — were also arrested on charge of aiding and abetting the youth.

The Commissioner’s Task Force Additional DCP A.S.C. John Wesley told reporters that Basawaraj, who used to market Airtel company’s post-paid mobile phone connections, collected photo identity cards and salary slips of his clients.

Fake transactions

Using his computer, he fabricated some of them in his name and secured credit cards from some private banks by presenting the same. To use the credit cards, he approached Nagaraj and Srisailam and explained that they were obtained by fraud. With their connivance, fake transactions were made.

For example, Nagaraj would issue a fake bill indicating the youngster had bought a mobile phone from his shop. He would then swipe the credit card given by Basawaraj and get money deposited in his account.

“Since, he got money without selling anything, he would give part of the amount in cash to Basawaraj,” the Additional DCP explained.
